Unseen Meghalaya – Hidden Treasures, Offbeat Places in Meghalaya

offbeat places in meghalaya

This blog is all about our real life experiences about exploring a beautiful gem of north east and offbeat places in Meghalaya. We have divided this experience into 4 parts or episodes and this time we are presenting it to you in form of videos too. Please do watch our videos below and subscribe to our channel on youtube too.

Teaser of our full trip : Unseen Meghalaya – 4 Episodes Series

Part 1 – Day 1 & 2 : Laitlum | Umiam Lake | Police Bazaar in Shillong

Started our day with early morning drive from our hotel to the beautiful Laitlum Valley or Laitlum Grand Canyons. We started a little early so that we can avoid city traffic and get less crowd at Laitlum.

Laitlum is one of the hidden or offbeat places in meghalaya, where many of the traditional tourist do not go. We found it on internet and heard a lot of good things about it. Hence we decided to go there.

Spent 2-3 hours at Laitlum and then decided to visit the famous Umiam Lake. Reached Umiam lake a little late but luckily got tickets to visit Umiam Lake Island. After Umiam Lake we decided to visit the famous Police Bazaar of Shillong to try local cuisine of North East.

Part 2 – Day 2 : Elephant Falls | Cherrapunji | Nohwet Village | Living Root Bridge

On our second day, we left Shillong and headed towards Cherrapunji. As we were heading towards Cherrapunji from Shillong, we saw Elephant Fall signboard, so we decided to stop there.

Elephant falls is a famous tourist on the way from Shillong to Cherrapunji. It has actually three waterfalls. Two waterfalls are quite small and there is one big fall which looks like the head of an elephant.

After this we left for our next destination, i.e. Nohwet Village. Nohwet village is also another offbeat places in Meghalaya where very less people stay. It is far from Cherrpunji but very near to Dawki, Mawlynnong (world’s cleanest village) & Bangladesh border.

We stayed in a local homestay by the name Nai Mei Homestay. After 4 hours drive we reached Nohwet a small village of Meghalaya very near to World’s cleanest Village Mawllynnyong.

We did some rest and then suddenly rain welcomed us in the village. We decided to enjoy the rain and take a stroll towards Living Root Bridge. It was near to our Homestay. So, this was end of our Day 2, we decided to hit the bed after having traditional Khasi Dinner. Special thanks to our Host & Homestay Owner “Hali” – Enjoy the video of our dinner and Hali (Our Host) playing Guitar. Watch the video to see our experiences on Day 2.

Part 3 – Day 3 : Trek to Bangladesh Border | Nohwet Village View Point

We started day 3 with a light breakfast at our homestay and then decided to start a beautiful trek with the help of our host “Hali”. He suggested us this Trek and convinced us to do it as it could be a lifetime experience.

The Trek was towards Bangladesh border and was about 1.5 to 2 hrs long. And it was a dense green forest covered with natural vegetation, fruits and local spices.

At last after almost 2 hrs of difficult downhill trekking, we reached this heavenly river, must watch the beautiful views of that river in our video below.

Then, after crossing the river bridge we reached till Bangladesh border. No video or photography was allowed at border hence we were not able to shoot anything there. We even entered a local Bangladeshi Market but didn’t go much far as we were not locals. After returning from the trek, we were tired and decided to do some rest. And then in evening we went to this beautiful View point, which was just 100 metres from our homestay (Nai Mei). Just check out some of the mesmerising views there in the video below.

Part 4 – Day 4 : Krang Suri Waterfall & Umngot / Dawki River (Shnongpdeng)

We again started day 4 by leaving our homestay early morning as we had to drive around 1.5 hours to reach Krang Shuri waterfalls. Its always good to reach there early to avoid the tourist crowd.

We reached Krang Suri at around 9 am, there was little crowd at that time. We entered the Krang suri waterfall, bought entry tickets and did a small trek on the way. It was an easy trek, as there were proper pavements and way till Krang Suri waterfall. Spent a good amount of time at Krangsuri water fall, did swimming in the fall too. We left Krang Shuri Waterfalls at around 2 PM and headed towards Shnongpdeng.

Shnongpdeng is a small village and another hidden or offbeat places in Meghalaya at Umngot River, which is also known as Dawki River. We avoided Dawki Village Point, as its very crowded. The Umngot or Dawki river is same at both the points. Its much better at Shnongpdeng in terms of views and less crowd. We did Kayaking there, the water was so clean. You can check that out in the video below.

We left Dawki river at around 5:30 PM and headed back to Nohwet Village.

Watch our video to experience the beautiful Krang Suri & Dawki River.

Want to See Snowfall in Manali? Go Kothi – Better than Solang Valley!

Solang Valley is one of the most beautiful tourist destination in Manali and one of the popular place to experience snowfall in winters. But this time we ditched Solang Valley and found a real offbeat gem (Kothi) which is much better than visiting Solang Valley in Manali.

Travel to Manali via Aut Tunnel : Nothing better to welcome new year with snow in our hands, so we started from Delhi on 27th December midnight. As roads till Manali are very good and our calculations went well to touch hills at the first ray of light. Soon we reached the famous AUT tunnel and entered Manali. Our destination was JagatSukh, 5kms from main Manali. Again an offbeat one. Away from all hustle bustle. We reached JagatSukh by 4pm and our bodies were begging to some rest.

Mall Road : Manali visit is incomplete without visiting the famous Mall road. So next day, we did the same. Like every hill station Mall road of Manali is also always crowded. We found this small Buddhist monastery nearby and paid our respect. We spent some time there and then enjoyed delicious food at this small cozy food joint “The Corner House”.

Old Manali Club House : After finishing food, we headed towards Old Manali Club House, again a popular tourist destination. The club house offers a great scenic view on the side. You can also get basic stuff like souvenir shops, food points, handicraft shops etc there. Outside there they have a haunted house, which you can visit and few outdoor activities like zip line, trampoline etc. The way to the clubhouse has lots of shops and food points as well.

Kothi Activities & Snow Slides : In old days, when people used to trek to Rohtang pass, Kothi used to be the camping site for Rohtang. Many still choose to do that. The village is at the base of Rohtang and is also the last village before the pass. Being at a little distance from Manali, most tourists don’t stay here but visit the place especially during snow-time. This is the reason why you won’t find cluttered spaces here and obviously very less crowded than Solang Valley. Kothi has all the activities & views that you find in Solang Valley but yet it is less far from Manali.

Road to Panduropa towards Allain Barrage : The next day we went for some off-roading towards Panduropa & Allain Barrage. Well thanks to our most trusted companion on these tough routes. We went till Allain Barrage, but can’t make any videos there as photography is prohibited on all dams in India.

Best things to do in Phuket and Krabi

Things to do phuket and krabi
Things to do phuket and krabi

Phuket and Krabi are two of the most visited destinations of Thailand. In recent times, tourism from India to Thailand has increased a lot and these 2 destinations have become the most visited destination by most of the people . You can do a lot of things on these 2 beautiful islands. From my personal experience, you should spend at least 8-12 days in these 2 places only to enjoy each and everything around.

So, here are some of the top things to do in Phuket and Krabi

Nightlife & Clubs at Bangla Street

If you are a party lover, then Bangla Street is a must visit. Ultra-happening clubs and pubs with beautifully lighted street. Enjoy a beer and awesome music. Watch out the video below :

Pub Hopping

Hop from one pub to another. Have one beer here and then another beer there. Enjoy the night, but beware of those fake cabaret show agents. They will follow you everywhere on the street. You will also find few local bands performing at the Patong Beach if you are in Phuket between November to February. They are really good. Check them out here :

Phuket Carnival – Local Band Performing

Phi Phi Island

One of the most favourite day trip of the tourists. You can book a single day trip to Phi Phi Island either on a speed boat, group boat or private boat. It all depends on the money that you want to spend… 😉

We took a group boat to Phi Phi Island via our travel agent in India. But now I would suggest not to book your Island tours from India or your home country. It would be cheaper if you book it in Thailand only and you will find a lot of options to choose from.

Stay Lazy at Krabi (Explore local)

Krabi is much more relaxing and laid back as compared to Phuket. We visited Krabi in the second half of our trip so that we can spend our second half of the trip in leisure and not make it much hectic.

Try local food, local markets, local drinks there. Bargain to get a better rate, apply you Indian skills..;) . Visit quite beaches and enjoy the beautiful sunsets. We stayed in Aao Nang at Krabi Beach Resort.

Use local transport its much cheaper than those overpriced Tuk Tuks and cabs. Local transport is quite safer. We used the local bus from Aao Nang to Krabi Town almost daily for 2-3 days.

Local Transport in Krabi

Otherwise you can also rent a scooter, but their deposit amount is too much. They ask for 3000 to 3500 Baht as a security or you have to keep you original passport with them (which is not at all a good idea for an international travel)

Thai Body Massage

This is one of the best thing that I would say everyone should definitely try out. There are a lot of good Thai massage parlours in Krabi. We used them 3-4 times in our entire trip. Trust me, its so relaxing and very different from the thai massages that are done in India.

Four Island Tour

Well, I personally loved this tour in my entire trip. We actually did this trip twice. First one was called “Four Island Tour” which was booked by our Indian travel agent and again it was a group tour and then the Second one which we booked ourselves locally was actually a 7 island tour and that too on a Private Long Tail Boat.

Private Longtail Boat for 4-7 Island Tour

Obviously, the second one was wonderful, as we had a private boat and we have our own driver, whom we can ask to stop to any Island we want. The best Island on this entire tour for us was Tup Island. It’s an isolated island with pure nature everywhere. It’s also a great place to snorkel (if you don’t know swimming) and see various colourful fishes and coral. The water is not too deep and you can really enjoy it.

Other points in this tour are :

Pranang Beach : Beautiful views and you can visit Pra Nang Cave here.

Pra Nang Cave

Chicken Island : It is one of the best snorkelling point. But water is quite deep here. You can snorkel here if you know basic swimming. Although your boat will provide you life jacket.

Chicken Island

Poda Island : Here you will get lunch and you can relax here for some time. This island has one restaurant where most of the boats stop to have lunch.

Railay Beach : Beautiful quiet beach to spend some quality time.

Try Street Food & Local Thai Cuisine

Enjoy local street food of Thailand. They have a lot of veg and non-veg food items to try out. From our opinion you should must try the following :
– Papaya Salad
– Banana Pan Cake
– Coconut Ice Cream
– Singha Beer
– Thai Curry with Rice
– Fried Banana
– Mango with Sticky Rice

If you are a non-vegeterian then there are a lot of Sea Food options are available there which you should must try out. And if you don’t like Thai Cuisine, then there are a lot of Indian restaurants available everywhere in Phuket and Krabi. Even you can find McDonalds at many places there.

This is one of the activity which I can personally do for hours. I love going inside the water and quietly watching that awesome sea life. You will find a lot of snorkelling points in Krabi and nearby island. I would suggest to keep your 1 day reserve for snorkelling related activities.

So guys that was our list according to our personal experience. I am mentioning few of the important things to carry on your Thailand trip, which will cost you very expensive if you purchase it from Thailand. Better to take them from here only.

Important things to carry on your Thailand Trip

Aqua Shoes or Snorkelling Shoes :

Click to buy these Aqua Shoes on Amazon

Some of the beaches are are very rocky and have sea shells which can hurt your feet. It is very necessary to buy Aqua Shoes like mentioned below.

Ocean Bag :

Click to buy this Ocean Bag on Amazon

An ocean bag is a water proof bag which you can carry inside the water too. It is indeed an essential accessory to keep you phone, wallet and camera dry because at some islands you have to walk in the water till your stomach length to reach beaches.

Good Beach Wear Shorts :

You should have extra beach wear shorts to keep yourself dry. It becomes uneasy in wet shorts.

Good Sunglasses :

Click to buy this Sunglass on Amazon

Get a good UV protected sunglass with you. It is necessary on sunny days.

Good Sunscreen Lotion :

Click to buy this Sunscreen on Amazon

A good sunscreen lotion is a must carry on any of your beach holiday. Carry minimum 30SPF+ sunscreen lotion.

DSLR or GoPro :

Click to buy Go Pro Hero 7 on Amazon

Must have a good DSLR camera or a GoPro to capture those wonderful scenes and beautiful beaches.

So that’s it from my side for now. Check out our other below trips too :

Feel free to add your experiences in the comments section below.

A complete guide to Meghalaya

travel Shillong in summer

Meghalaya Guide

India is a gem and there are so many good things about the entire country. The places, the languages, people, culture and everything clubbed together makes the place a heaven for not just Indian but also the foreign tourists. There are a lot of tourists who come from various countries in order to get a lot of beautiful clicks and to experience the natural beauty that the country hosts.

From the royal forts in Rajasthan to the Himalayan range, India is also blessed with diversity in flora and fauna. My recent trip to one of the best places I have ever visited took me off-guard because I didn’t have an idea that there was such a place that even existed. I lastly visited Meghalaya which is one of the states in the seven sisters of India and one of the most beautiful places in the North Eastern states. This place is blessed with the Rocky Mountains, mesmerizing sights and a lot more.

I started my trip from Delhi taking a flight straight from the city to Shillong which is one of the most developed cities in Meghalaya. It is the best way to reach here and in the shortest time. Trip to Meghalaya was always on the card for me. As soon as I reached the airport, I went to the food joint, and if you are starving, you can visit here. There a few options.

Day 1

The first days are always good. On my first day here, I just sat around and chilled. I visited the main market and tried some of their local dishes. I ate Jodoh and Pumaloi at breakfast. Jodoh is a very popular dish in town and it is healthy+ tasty, making it the perfect breakfast meal. You get chopped vegetables and garnished with either eggs or fish. After having it in a local restaurant I pushed off to my first destination which was in Shillong itself. I had a constraint of days but then I also didn’t want to lose any charming spot. So according to plan, my first day had to be in Shillong itself. You can also go on a budget trip to Meghalaya as there are a lot of comfortable options that you get with it.

Places to visit in Shillong

First of all, you should always carry an umbrella or a raincoat because you would never know when it will rain. So I carried one water bottle, a tent and a raincoat with me. My Meghalaya tour itinerary was already built and these places were right on the top.

Elephant Falls

My solo trip started from Elephant Falls, which was a pristine spot. You will find a lot of people coming here to enjoy the beautiful place. You can take a shower in nature if you want or just sit there to enjoy the serenity of the place and take in the beauty as well. You can check with Meghalaya tourism for the tickets and other stuff.

Don Bosco Museum

My next spot was the famous Don Bosco Museum which really looked amazing from the inside as well as the outside. Apart from Sundays and National Holidays, this place is open every day. You can take the entry ticket which is 100 INR for the adult Indian citizens and 50 INR for the students. The rates for the foreigners get revised often.

Shillong Peak

The purpose of coming to Shillong would have been a waste if I would have left the Shillong Peak. This is a high point from where you can take pictures of the city which is below you. The 360-degree view of the place is breath-taking and you would see a lot of Fauna all around. If you are coming to this place just do not miss this spot. From here I went to a nearby restaurant for having lunch. And my stomach got full with their another local dish which was Nakham Bitchi. It is a delicious soup and people here eat it only when they want a heavy spicy meal. And god, I wanted it as I was starving.

Umiam Lake

After filling up my stomach there was this beautiful lake that was waiting for my presence, named as Umiam Lake. You can stand by the shore and click pictures, go for kayaking or a boating trip or just enjoy yatching and river bus. So this spot became my last spot for the day.

Day 2

For the next day, I hired a bike and went off to Cherrapunji which is just 53 km from the capital city of Meghalaya. But along the ride, you would see some of the best views so keep your camera and mobile charged. Stop at some points and just get a few beautiful clicks.

My entire day included traveling and staying in Cherrapunji. I visited some of the best places in the city which includes, Double Decker living root, Dawki, Krem Phyllut, and the magnificent Nohkalikai Waterfall. Do not miss any of these and you can get your hands on some of the best dishes here, such as Dohkhelieh which is a delicious pork salad. For all the non-vegetarians who are visiting here, the place is going to treat you with some of the tastiest food you would have ever had.

I still didn’t have the hang of the place but due to the time constraint, I had to take a bus back to Guwahati which is a 150 km ride. I had half a day to explore the city which I totally enjoyed. The people, the food, the drinks, everything here was amazing. I left from the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport which is the city itself with a promise of returning to the place with more time, to bag up some great experiences. Checkout with the Meghalaya tour operators for this because they are going to give a lot of good options.

So if you are following a strict routine, this should be on your list but if you have some more time, then there are a lot of other places to visit as well.

Some tips while coming to the place:

So get your charts ready and keep some extra clothes as well.

The complete trip to Meghalaya cost me around 20k to the max.

You should keep a raincoat in your bag as well.

Carry a waterproof bag.

If you wish to trek in the place, just get yourself trekking shoes, because the mountain region that bears the trek trails are slippery at a lot of places, so the normal sport’s shoes could just ditch you at certain points.

Dapoli : A hidden town of Western Ghats & Clean Beaches

Dapoli, I must say a very beautiful town in the district of famous Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, especially known for famous Alphonso (Hapus) mangoes and its clean and clear beaches. It is also known as “Mini Mahabaleshwar” of Maharashtra. Dapoli is situated at the height of 800 – 1000 ft above sea level in a mountain range which is separated from Sahyadri mountain range.

The cool and pleasant climate in Dapoli, very close proximity to beaches and a very long coastal line of nearly 50 KMs makes it one of the best destination to spend some quality time with some of the finest beaches in Konkan like Ladghar, Karde, Harnai, Anjarle, Kelshi. Also read :

Also Read :

Dapoli and its beaches in Maharashtra have managed to remain somehow untouched and unspoiled from the tourists crowds and are amongst the cleanest ones on the entire west cost of India. There are number of things to do in Dapoli especially for nature lovers, who can indulge themselves in exploring the hiking trails in the nearby jungles, do bird watching, see Dolphins and Sea Turtle Conservation Project. There are few ancient temples, forts, caves and hot springs nearby.

Trust me! Dapoli is way better than dirty & crowded Goa Beaches & especially Alibaug which is too much crowded these days. Kashid beach you can try near Alibaug which is much better than rest.

Our Road Trip from Pune to Dapoli (Ladghar Beach)

We decided to start from Pune at 11am. Dapoli or our destination Ladghar beach which is around 6-7 hours drive from Pune. From Pune to Dapoli we decided the choose the route via Mulashi and Tamhini Ghat.

Our Route from (Pune to Ladghar)
Aundh(Pune) -> Bushi Dam (Lonavala) -> Mulashi -> Tamhini Ghat -> Dapoli -> Ladghar Beach

We suggest everyone to choose that route if you are really a nature lover. It’s a very beautiful drive with mesmerising landscapes. The roads till Tamhini are fine, however the condition of roads gets bad after Tamhini, the number of potholes were more than the number of vehicle on that dirt track. It’s quite difficult to shift to top gear for a long stretch.

Short Detour to Bhushi Dam (Near Lonavala) & some beautiful landscapes on the way.

A post shared by Keshav Munjal (@keshav.munjal) on

Finally, at around 9PM we reached Ladghar. It took us almost 10 hours because we stopped at Bushi Dam and took few short breaks too. We have already booked this beautiful cottage (Bangli – The finest Konkan Living) right on the Ladghar Beach. Trust me, it’s one of the most beautiful and great property on Ladghar Beach to spend a comfortable stay with your loved ones. Obviously, I should not forget to mention it’s very friendly and wonderful host “Ameya Bal

There are several activities available at nearby beaches, we visited in the monsoon months hence we were not able to try them and we decided to enjoy the off season’s solitude of our own.

The Ladghar Beach

The Ladghar beach is a very peaceful, less crowded beach of Dapoli. At that time because of monsoon the tides were a little high but overall it was quite calm. The water was not much clear at that time because of too much rains, but still it was way better than those overcrowded beaches of Goa and other popular tourist destinations. Ladghar Beach and other beaches in Dapoli are one of the unexplored beaches in India.

Mentioning few of the key things that makes it a great destination to spend some peaceful & quality time.

Clear water

As I have already mentioned, unlike other beaches of India, Ratnagiri / Dapoli beaches are quite clean & clear. One can enjoy a lot of leisure time here like just reading a book quietly or not at all doing anything apart from just watching the beauty of the waves.

Less Crowded

As they are not much touristy, hence you will not find a lot of crowd here. For us it was indeed a great experience as we always look for our own private areas where we can go and enjoy the nature all alone.

Nice & affordable Homestays & Private Cottages

You will find pretty decent and affordable homestays and AirBnBs here. Do not expect any kind of luxury but they are still equipped with various modern facilities like wi-fi, ample parking space, clean washrooms & good rooms to stay. Also the cherry on the pie is, they are all located right on the beach.

Easy to drive from Pune & Mumbai

Ladghar is easy to drive from both Pune and Mumbai. It will take around 6-7 hours to reach there from any of the side you start. You will experience beautiful landscapes and totally green surroundings on the way, if you travel between June to September. Although that is monsoon period, but it is worth to be trying.

Here are some of the ways in which you can visit beautiful places without having to spend lots and lots of money. Read on to find out how to travel the world cheap or how to travel for free.

1. Stay Away From The Tours And Travels Managers:

This is a raging business these days. The tours and travels managers, although offer a great package, charge a lot of money in turn of their service. They usually set their charges after keeping a marginal profit of their own. Not going for such agencies helps you to cut down on the extra expenses.

2. Plan A DIY Trip:

What can be better than DIY trips? Pick up a destination, plan the trip with your gang and get set go!

3. Book Your Tickets Much Beforehand:

The key to comfortable and economical travel is booking the tickets much beforehand. The tickets that are booked six months before the date of travel are much cheaper as compared to those booked just before a couple of months. It also saves you the risk of unavailability of seats. Booking the tickets at the last minute is not only expensive but also uncertain. You may have to share the seat with your co-travelers. Get rid of all the fuss and be proactive!

4. Stay Updated With The Discounts Offered By The Flights:

Different airlines companies charge different amounts for their services. Also, they offer lucrative discounts during different occasions. Grab the best deal and go for it.

5. Compare The Prices Of Hotels And Different Airlines:

This is important! While some of the companies, be it an airlines company or any hotel, charge lots of money for their comparatively poor services, some of the other companies may serve you better at a much lower rate. Always read the reviews thoroughly before availing the service of any brand.

6. Stay With The Locals Wherever You Go:

Now we’re talking! Here’s the first step you need to know if you want to know how to travel for free. How about ditching the idea of staying in hotels? You could just put up anywhere, like the houses of the locals. It is at these places where you get the most hospitality and warmth.

7. Go Backpacking; Put Up Tents:

Or even better, put up your own tents. What can be more adventurous than staying right under the sky and stargazing? Carry your tents wherever you go. This will not only save your money but also help you witness an experience that you will remember for a lifetime.

8. Using Airbnb:

Try using AirBNB. This is going to save you lots of bucks.

9. Visit Places That Are Cheaper:

A vacation doesn’t always have to be a getaway to some expensive place. A vacation is going to some place which will give you peace and serenity. While dreaming of a candlelight dinner near the Eiffel tower, one often tends to overlook the beautiful places around him. This vacation, go to the nearest and cheapest tourists destinations and spend some quality time with your gang or your loved one.

10. Cooking Their Own Meals:

Unless you are a food enthusiast, this one will work wonders for you. Avoid eating at restaurants unless you want to taste some special dish belonging to the palace. Cook your own food. This is not only an economic method but also helps you to keep healthy while you are on your trip!

11. Planning The Budget Beforehand:

It is important that you have a budget ready. Planning the budget beforehand will help you to spend money systematically. Know how much money you have to spend on conveyance, stay and food. If your expenditure exceeds your budget, you are doing it wrong and need to rectify yourself. Without a proper budget, you’ll keep spending unless you run out of cash.

12. Traveling In The Offseason:

Why not visiting a hill station during December? Many people visit hill stations in order to avoid the scorching heat at their place. Instead, you can plan a trip to the same hill station during winter (when people aren’t likely to visit the place). This will not only be an economic method but also you’ll get to enjoy the spine-chilling cold that people usually miss out on.

13. Avail Carpool Service:

Travel in groups. Share the car with a group of other people. In this way, the fare will be equally divided among all the people traveling by the vehicle. It is useless to hire one big car for a small group of people. You will have to pay for seats that are going to remain vacant. Instead, share the car with another such small group.

14. Use Other People’s Vehicles For Transport (Hitchhike):

Exciting, ain’t it? You can ask the locals to give you a ride to some nearby destination. In turn, you could just offer him some money or even share your meal with him. This is economic as well as a fun idea to try out, especially if you are on a solo trip.

15. Travel In Groups; Share The Expenses:

When a large number of people are traveling together, it makes it easy to manage the expenses. Whatever money is spent, it is equally divided among all the members, and this reduces the cost per head.

16. Participate In Whatever Contests You Come Across:

Raise money even when you are on a trip. Take part in every contest that you come across. If you fail to win, then hard luck. But if you win, you may even get to earn a few bucks that you can use in your vacation. There’s no harm giving it a shot, right?

17. Don’t Buy Gifts In Airports:

I repeat, DON’T! The things are sold at the airport at a price which is manifold times higher than the original price of the goods. This is the worst mistake that any traveler can make. Just avoid buying gift items at the airport.

Don’t Buy Gifts In Airports:

18. On-Foot Tours:

If you and your better half have not had a heart to heart conversation for a long time, this is exactly what you need. You can also travel on foot. Doesn’t sound like a bad idea walking for miles with your loved one or your friends? This will also help you to spend some alone time with them.

19. Sleep In Dorms:

How about sleeping in the dorms of large places?

20. Avail Discounts And Concessions:

This has to be the most important point. Avail every kind of concession and discount you get. There are concessions for females and also other discounts based on your profession. Sometimes, some of the railway employees can also travel for free along with a free pass for another person. See how much you can save?

TIP: Don’t Hire Travel Guide, Use Google Map Instead:

Another important tip for the tourists is that they should not hire a tour guide to guide them through the place. Most of the guides tend to dupe you by providing information which is incorrect. They don’t show you half of the places but charge a handsome amount of money for their half-hearted effort. This is an injustice to all the people who trust them to educate them about a place. You can explore much more when you ditch a tour guide and start traveling on your own. Moreover, who needs a guide when you have the support of Google?

Things To Do On A Trip

When are you listing down the techniques of how to travel for free, then there is another most important list, “things to do on a trip”. You are not always traveling or sightseeing when you are on a trip. For the times when you want to kill your boredom, there are quite a number of things that can be done. Let’s discuss a few of them.

  • Interact with the locals. Talking to the locals will give you a clear idea about the culture and the customs of the place. If you manage to develop a nice relationship with them, you might even be lucky to be treated with their meals. (Oh yes! You saved the money you were about to spend on snacks!)
  • Take a bicycle trip and explore new places. There are going to be places that are much less talked about but they might be so beautiful so as to pop your eyeballs out. All you have to do is hire a bicycle from a local (because from some authorized store, it is going to be expensive) and set out to your adventure
  • One of the biggest advantages of travelling is that you get to learn new languages. Exploring new places, talking to the locals are a much more effective way of learning about the manners and the mannerisms and the language of the people of a place. You get to know so much more than what is written in the books.
  • Shop and shop. Get everything that your heart craves for from the local markets. This is something which is very personal and is completely up to you whether you want to spend your money on shopping or not.
  • Showcase your talent on the streets. If you are good at art, make a street art. If you can play an instrument and sing, do it. Trust me, once you dare to stand amidst the street and start, there will be lots and lots of people flocking around you. There might even be chances that you earn a mere something out of it. You can at least raise money for your snacks for the day. Good enough, eh?
  • Bump into museums and art galleries. They tell a lot about the history and the culture of the places. You will get to know about the important people who used to stay there and all the events of importance which took place there.
Spend some time close to Mother Nature. This is the best thing one can do on a trip. In our busy everyday lives we often tend to overlook all the beauties that surround us. We forget to appreciate the facilities that we luxuriate in. Nature gives us lessons like no one else does. The times spent close to nature will remain etched in our memories for an eternity. It’s time you keep your mobile phones aside and bask in the serenity.

Despite all these things, one thing that you have to ensure is your own safety. Hitchhiking, putting up at the houses of the locals, resting in tents, all of these seem to be great ideas as long as they are safe. If you are not experienced enough, you may not be up to staying at the wrong person’s house or boarding the wrong person’s vehicle for a ride. You may even put up a tent at the wrong place that might be prone to the attack of wild animals or even landslides and other calamities. Adventures are thrilling but not at the expense of your safety and your life.

So your search for how to travel for free or how to travel the world at cheap rates ends here. Have you packed your bags?
